Chloroquine with antibiotic -- just maybe!

Prez prods FDA to get moving on preliminary approval

Even though the combo spotlighted by the President probably doesn't cure everyone, if it turns out that it reduces infection in a major percentage of patients, that would mean a substantial slowdown in the contamination rate.

It has been reported that hospitals are scrambling to stock the medicines.

Covid-19 can be very dangerous even among the middle-aged, though men seem exceptionally vulnerable. In some people, the disease suddenly reaches a tipping point, the lungs fill up with fluid, making breathing very difficult. Many Ards patients cease breathing and die despite ventilator assistance. (Ards = acute respiratory syndrome.)

President Trump tweeted today:
HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine. The FDA has moved mountains - Thank You! Hopefully they will BOTH (H works better with A, International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents).....
....be put in use IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE ARE DYING, MOVE FAST, and GOD BLESS EVERYONE!
Twitter listed 48.8K "retweets" and 164.6K "like"s.

Hydroxychloroquine is reported to be a safer form of chloroquine than another form that is also available.

The Food and Drug Administration hasn’t yet approved the drugs to treat Covid-19, but in the emergency the fast-track approach urged by the President seemed likely.

On Friday, Bloomberg News ran a story trashing Trump's spotlighting of chloroquine.

"The drug touted by the U.S. President Donald Trump as a possible line of treatment against the coronavirus comes with severe warnings in China and can kill in dosages as little as two grams," the news agency report said.

"A Wuhan Institute of Virology study found that the drug can kill an adult just dosed at twice the daily amount recommended for treatment, which is one gram," the story later noted.

Chloroquine has been used for decades as a malaria blocker and as a treatment for amoebic dysentery and its medical aspects have been extensively studied and are well known.

A Fox News report quotes Bloomberg's critics pointing out that an overdose of any drug can lead to death.

"Two grams of almost any drug will kill you," National Review senior writer Michael Brendan Dougherty noted.

"Every drug ever in history kills if overdosed... Even water kills if taken in excess," said Dr. Milton Wolf, a conservative activist. "The American media is garbage. They'll claim a cure is a killer just to bash" Trump's tweets.

"This story must be generating some sweet hate-traffic to still be up. It has to be the dumbest attack on Trump ever published, and there’s a lot of competition," Washington Free Beacon Executive Editor Brent Scher said.

"This story is absolutely ridiculous/a strawman. Nobody is prescribing patients 2000mg of chloroquine," political commentator Alicia Smith tweeted.

It is nothing short of bizarre how most of the press is blowing off or ignoring the potential that this treatment will be of service. Instead, the only themes are how severe the virus is and why it's Trump's fault. Nothing positive or hopeful. It's as if the media are determined to make things worse, not better.

Dr. Mehmet Cengiz Öz, a television personality who directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, told an interviewer that he was surprised that the press paid little heed to a French study that showed very effective results in fighting Covid-19 with a chloroquine regimen.
